Philip Paniamogan erupted with four triples in the last four minutes to power the Jose Rizal University Heavy Bombers to an 83-72 stopping of the Mapua Cardinals yesterday in the 89th National Collegiate Athletic Association men’s basketball tournament. The six-foot Paniamogan, who fired a game-high 24 points and a total of seven treys, hit his fourth bomb in the last 7:59, allowing the Heavy Bombers to snatch back the lead, 66-64. Mapua tied the count for the last time at 66-all on Jessie Saitanan’s shot, but Paniamogan fueled a 13-2 run with his final three triples as JRU found a way to get past Mapua’s 1-2-2 defense and never looked back after taking an 81-68 advantage. “So many turnovers pagdating sa third quarter. They (Cardinals) got the lead. But the important thing is nandoon ‘yung composure namin and Philip made the big shots,” said JRU coach Vergel Meneses. John Pontejos backed up Paniamogan with 18 points. Meanwhile, the San Beda Red Cubs, who are seeking a fifth straight crown, and the Jose Rizal University Light Bombers, got off to impressive starts in the junior division. Getting double digit performances from six mainstays, the Red Cubs walloped the Lyceum Junior Pirates, 119-38. On the other hand, the Jose Rizal University Light Bombers, led by Jeric Adorio and Andrei Dada, turned back the Mapua Red Robins, 69-61. Javee Mocon, Ranbill Tongco, Norrish Decapia, Arvin Tolentino, Benjamin de Villeres and Marc Diputado showed the way with 19, 17, 16, 12, 11 and 10 points, respectively, for the Red Cubs. Adorio and Dada had 27 and 16 points, respectively, for the Light Bombers. The Red Cubs’ 81-point scoring margin hardly came close to the 157-point lead they had when they walloped the Junior Pirates, 117-14, last season. “We expected a big lead because we dictated the pace right away,” said debuting Red Cubs coach JB Sison. Tongco showed the way with 10 points in the first canto as the Red Cubs took a 32-12 spread in the opening 10 minutes. The Light Bombers broke free from a 50-all deadlock at the start of the fourth period. Dada’s 11-point output in the last 10 minutes enabled JRU to finish the game with an eight-point edge. Noah Lugo showed the way for the Red Robins with 17 points and four rebounds.
