Philip asked me for a poem I wrote with an intricate rhyme structure, since I cant find it anymore wrote this one instead Hope it serves the purpose. 21st centruy sestina* for Anna A long time ago it was that we both met Didnt I tell you your face was lit up like a star? Your smile was shy, your hands were thin Yet when you spoke, your smile my heart did win You were heavens gift to me, clearly, whether in salwar or sari My mother died, and you became as Rebekah to me My mouth was filled with laughter, grief couldnt long deter me At our wedding you wore brown. I wish we had earlier met I was a fashion- rustic. I could not appreciate your sari But the smile still there I could, and clear eyes that shone like a star Our early days were filled with learning, and battles we did win Learning like the ones that endure to stick through thick and thin Our first girl was born; she was small, blue and thin But she survived, and was dear to you and me A Caesarean, and you suffered much her to win Helped by our loved ones. We were glad wed met Now that we had her to cherish, our new born star I dreamt of one day seeing her in a sari Then came the second, again meant for the sari She, unlike all of us, had hands and legs not thin Her smile, from the beginning, showed her under goodness star Anything she got she would divide; for her sister, you and me So there we were all four, under one roof, well met And fairer family or weather or life none could win Into every life some rain must fall, (before we win?) You would say, smiling. No more in brown sari Three Caesareans. We stopped. Our darling boy we met He had a huge head. A huge smile. Nothing of him thin But he would not speak a word, for the life of me For a long time. He was no less of a star One day I heard a word I did not know, said of this star Everything turned topsy turvy. Life seemed no more a win But your smile never altered, so the shadows crept by me Small things still made us laugh. I liked, by now, your brown sari But I felt like bread on butter stretched out too thin Something died in me, but my comfort was that wed met Envoi You remain my star, in your brown sari You will always win, though your wrists are still thin Well met, Anna, though you deserve more than me. *en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sestina For those who want to know the rhyme scheme used in the envoi it is - 2–5, 4–3, 6–1 For those who want to know the rhyme scheme of the first six stanzas please check the pic.
