Philipose Mathai of Delhi, driving a Maruti Zen with a Baleno engine, twin cam turbo, fiberglass body and various other performance enhancers at a top speed of 160 kms per hour was fastest overall at Round One of The Solo Challenge National Championship, held near Sarangpur village in UT today. The track length for Auto (Modified) was 10.4 kms, since it had the added component of an offroad section.The track length for The Solo Challenge Moto races, which were held yesterday, was 9.2 kms. Mathai was faster than Mohit Verma, who won the Moto (motorcycles) category riding his KTM 390 at a top speed of about 150 kilometers an hour. Mathai topped the Auto (Modified) category in 398.519 seconds. Second in this category was Rahul Kanthraj of Bangalore, who finished in 409.763 seconds driving a Maruti Zen. Parminder Thakur of Shimla was third, at 411.827 seconds. Thakur was driving a Maruti Baleno. Races for the Auto (four-wheeler) category were held today, with SUVs and cars of diverse makes and sizes competing for the top spot in their respective categories. The Modified vehicles were competing in the extreme category of the event. These vehicles were equipped with roll cages, eight-point harness, seat belt, FIA approved helmets, rally seats and other FMSCI-endorsed safety enhancements. In the Auto (stock) category, Angad Matharoo, driving an I-20 was first at 431.841 seconds. Harvinder Bhola, driving a Honda Civic, ranked second finishing at 457.771 seconds. Aditya Thakur, driving a Volkswagen Polo 1.6 (petrol) ranked third at 475.78 seconds. The track for the Stock category was slower and safer as compared to the track for the Modified category. In this category, the only changes allowed in the car were in the tyres, rims, steering and the exhaust ends. In Auto (Modified, up to 1400 CC), Philipose Mathai ranked first, completing the race in 406.589 seconds. Abhishek Mishra of Jaipur ranked second, by finishing at 421.43 seconds. In Auto (Modified, up to 1800 CC), Sanjay Sikand of Delhi ranked first at 414.341 seconds. Rahul Kanthraj ranked second in this category, missing the first rank by nano-seconds. His total timing was 414.347 seconds. Abhishek Mishra was third in this category, at 415.815 seconds. Parminder Thakur was fourth, at 416.241 seconds. In Auto (Stock, upto 1800 CC), Harvinder Bhola was first at 455.415 seconds. Aditya Thakur was second at 470.381 seconds. Sazid Sangha was third at 488.406 seconds. In the Auto (Stock diesel SUV open category), Karan Bali ranked first, finishing at 490.27 seconds. Gaurav Chiripal was second at 501.496 seconds and Bani Yadav was third at 520.771 seconds. In the Auto (Stock 4X4 Open) category, Harvinder Bhola ranked first at 457.717 seconds. Bani Yadav ranked second at 509.008 seconds and Suresh Yadav ranked third at 542.101 seconds. Suresh Yadav and Bani Yadav were the only couple participating in the contest, in which Bani drove faster than Suresh and ranked second. Bani also ranked first in the Women’s category, clocking a total time of 506.121 seconds. The Solo Challenge National Championship is a highly popular format of motorsport worldwide. It is a single driver, single stage, single day event in its particular category. The national championship is being organized by Northern Motorsport, in collaboration with Chandigarh-based Team Chandigarh Adventure Sports (TCAS). Founder TCAS Mr Gulpreet Aulakh said that a total of 189 races were held today, with 90 competitors from various parts of the country. Each competitor was allowed a maximum of four races, and his best timing was chosen for the final result calculation. Round 2 of the championship will be organized at Jaipur in November. The final round will be organized over the Formula 1 racing track at Buddh International Circuit, Noida, in January 2015. After the three rounds are over, each competitor will be given a national ranking. The trophies were given to the competitors at the prize distribution function held at the venue today evening. Northern Motorsport is part of the organizing team for the Indian Grand Prix – the Formula 1 Race held at the Buddh International Circuit, Greater Noida. Northern Motorsport organizes all the other motorsport events held on the Formula 1 track.
