Instead, Spain handed over Philippines to the United States which later gave independence to the Philippines through the Treaty of Manila on 4 July 1946. Philippines observed 4 July as its Independence Day temporarily until President Diosdado Macapagal declared the shift of Philippines Independence Day to 12 June through the Presidential Proclamation No. 28 issued on 12 May 1962. 4 July was then renamed as the Philippine Republic Day. Formerly, Philippine Independence Day is considered as a national Flag Day when the Filipinos are required to fly the Philippine Flag.
