Philippine basketball legend Ramon Fernandez blasts Chot Reyes MANILA – Philippine basketball legend Ramon Fernandez is the latest sports figure to speak against national team coach Chot Reyes. Least to say, the former four-time PBA Most Valuable Player is far from happy with the Philippines’ run in the recent Asian Games in Incheon, Korea wherein the squad finished seventh overall, the worst ever for the country. Furthermore, that performance turned for the worst when Reyes instructed Marcus Douthit to shoot in the Philippines’ own goal against Kazakhstan to extend the game into overtime and give the Philippines a chance to meet the 11 point target in order for them to advance. In a story ran by Rey Bancod of Tempo, Fernandez held nothing back as he sent tirades towards the 51-year old national team mentor. “Sad to say, but it’s a nightmare,” Fernandez wrote to several newspapers last Friday, including Tempo. “Honestly, I’m ashamed. I’m frustrated. I pity the players and more importantly, I feel for the passionate basketball fans who were duped by press releases, documentaries, coffee table book that led us to believe that (national coach Chot Reyes) can bring us to the basketball land of promise.” Fernandez is no stranger to playing for flag and country as he won two gold medals with the Philippines, the first when playing in the Under 18 squad in the FIBA Asia in 1973 and winning with the senior squad a year later in the FIBA Asia Championship. Co-incidentally, it was the last time the Philippines won a gold medal in the tournament. Read more at: rivals.ph/basketball/2014/10/ramon-fernandez-chot-reyes/
