Philippines prepares for super typhoon Reuters Posted at 11/06/2013 3:00 PM | Updated as of 11/06/2013 4:09 PM MANILA - The Philippine Coast Guard and other concerned agencies have begun preparing for the arrival of Typhoon Haiyan. The powerful typhoon is expected to make landfall in central Philippines in next few days, disaster officials said. Typhoon Haiyan, with winds reaching 150 kph (93 mph) and gusts up to 185 kph (114 mph), is expected to intensify as it enters the Philippine waters on Thursday (November 7), the state weather bureau reported. The national disaster agency has placed several provinces in the central Philippines on red alert as Haiyan is expected to make landfall on the central province of Leyte Friday (November 8) morning. Disaster officials have advised the local government to conduct preemptive evacuation on the affected residents. We have alerted our personnel, especially our district units, stations and detachments where the typhoon is expected to pass. In fact, we have issued messages to recall deep sea fishing boats, Philippine Coast Guard Commandant Rear Admiral Rodolfo Isorena said. Additional rescue boats have been stationed in the Philippine capital for search and rescue operations. State meteorologists warned that typhoon Haiyan could be more devastating than typhoon Bopha in 2012, which left more than 1,000 people dead and caused $1 billion worth of damage in southern Philippines. An average of 20 typhoons hit the Philippines each year, often causing death and destruction. Haiyan will be the 25th typhoon to enter Philippine territory this year.
