Pholonogical awareness is one of early literacy skills. It is an ability to hear and manipulate the smaller sounds in words. This includes the ability to create rhymes, to breakdown sounds or to combine sounds together to make a word. You can promote this skill through: 1. Playing a drum. Encourage your child to listen and imitate the total drum beat. You can also alternate the loudness between the beats. 2. Finding words that share final syllable sounds (rhyme) e.g. buku vs kuku. Remember, children learn how to segment sounds as a whole first, i.e. syllable, then only they can segment the sounds individually e.g. /a/, /u/.
