Phone Advice for those who may travel to Canada: Not even every quad band cell phone plays well with the Rogers and Telus networks up there, which require being attuned to specific frequencies. You can wind up paying exorbitant roaming charges via your domestic (US) SIM and/or having a perfectly good SIM for Canada thats unable to maintain a stable connection. Both those things happened to me, on three different and excellent Chinese Android telephony devices that work in Europe and the US, but arent calibrated for what lies due North. It took forever before I spoke to a tech guy from G3Wireless (pay-as-you-go Canadian SIM) hip enough to know that the card wasnt malfunctioning, it just wasnt compatible. Again, *despite* quad band reception. After much research, I have the answer: Any phone in the Leagoo line, a relatively new Chinese brand reputed to feature the cheapest high-end Android phones on the market, each running KitKat 4.4 on a quadcore MTK6852 processor. Specifically, perhaps uniquely for a Chinese brand (so far), designed to be universally friendly. Like most Chinese models, Leagoos hold two SIM cards (the second is not mandatory), so you can, if you like, use it on *both* sides of the border, with both a US and a Canadian carrier (or any two carriers you choose). I bought the Lead 3, the second smallest but still pretty impressive at 4.5 for about $72, no tax, no shipping. As the model numbers move backward (4, 3, 2, 1) theyre progressively .5 bigger and a bit more expensive. Leagoo has fancier Octacore models too. You can get em at various Chinese online retail outlets; also on eBay and at Amazon. Various colors too. Augment that purchase with some extra batteries (if you browse, you can find them for $7 apiece) and a 32G microSD card (about $10 on eBay) and youre fully kitted to do stuff like, oh, I dont know, travel to Montreal in June to see THE APPRENTICESHIP OF DUDDY KRAVITZ at the Segal Centre. Just sayin ... https://youtube/watch?v=jp5FXr1J0SU
