(Photo 1&2) VFW Calabash Post #7288 Commander Rick Arvonio welcomes a crowd of 150 veterans, families and friends to the Posts Veterans Day Service November 11th. Members of the Commanders family served in the armed forces of the United States in the Civil War, World War I, World War II, Korea and Vietnam. In his remarks he offered a brief history of the day we now know as Veterans Day. Participating in the VFW Calabash Posts observance were members of the Post, its Ladies Auxiliary and its Mens Auxiliary. (Photo 3) Pictured in the foreground is Post Commander Rick Arvonio and to his left featured speaker Pat Patterson. Patterson, a bomber pilot during World War Two, was shot down and held prisoner of war in a German prison camp before returning home. (Photos 4 & 5) During his message, Patterson told the crowd that to his way of thinking the so-called Greatest Generation applies to all veterans of all wars, not just the Second World War. Participating in the Calabash VFW observance were members of the Post, its Ladies Auxiliary and its Mens Auxiliary.
