PhotoHike: September 8, 2014 Middle Prong Trail Our trip to Middle Prong Trail began with a beautiful picture opportunity of the sunrise from Little River Road. This was our first time hiking Middle Prong. The trek offered a couple surprises as well as a little disappointment. But overall it was a good hike nonetheless. We decided to hike all the way to the junction with Greenbrier Ridge Trail. The trail follows the railroad bed that the Little River Lumber Company used to bring logs out of the area up until 1939. You can still see remnants of the railroad such as rails and cables and we even found a railroad spike laying just off the trail. There is also an old chimney and the remains of an old Cadillac along the way. One of the things I love to take pictures of are waterfalls and I was as excited as usual at the chance to bring back some great shots of Indian Flats Falls. But we couldnt find the trail leading to it. We actually found a trail that split off to one side near the end of Middle Prong but it was very narrow and in places it didnt even resemble a trail. We decided to turn back since we didnt know for sure if it was the way to the falls. That was the disappointing part of the hike. Of course, venturing down that narrow trail wasnt made any easier by the surprise we had earlier on the main trail: a big black snake slowly emerging from the vegetation at the side of the trail. That was a little unsettling so finding the waterfall was no longer a main priority. On the way back we were surprised by another black snake that was lying along the edge of the trail. All in all it was a good hike but we had our fill of snakes for awhile. I think well take another break from hiking next week to give ourselves a chance to forget about the snakes.
