Photograph of an unknown African American woman taken at Wonderland Park in Baltimore, Maryland. An April 2, 1920 advertisement in the Afro-American announced the following: The Wonderland Park, the Coney Island of Baltimore, will have its GRAND OPENING, May 30, 1920. It will provide a much needed up-to-date Amusement Park for the 125,000 Colored People of this City. The Mason Amusement Corporation owns $28,000 worth of land on the waterfront in Baltimore City, controlled by colored men. I was able to come across many advertisements featuring famous musicians during the jazz age performing at this park. From Duke Ellington to King Oliver and his Dixie Syncopators. Sadly, an ad dated November 20, 1929 announced the following: Wonderland Park, which was built by a corporation organized in 1921 by Dr. Joseph Mason (colored) who four years later sold a controlling interest to W.D. Seamon (white). It was sold at auction to satisfy a $12,000 mortgage, and was bid in by Mr. Seamon for $5,000 over the mortgage -- $17,000 in all. The minority stockholders have protested the sale, which if it stands wipes out the most of their investment. The land alone cost $28,000.
