Photographers don’t make much money – how not to be one of them. Some photographers make hundreds of thousands of dollars per year, a few make over a million. The top 10% make just over $60,000 a year. Sadly, for most photographers they traditional make less than $30,000 per year. So, if you are considering this artistic craft as a career choice, here are a few things you must do. • Photograph everyday – The top photographers are known for photographing everyday, not just when they have an assignment. • Separate your self from the competition. Combine your photographic passion with a technique, style, technology or skill. The ability to create an in focus, properly exposed and well-composed image is not good enough to keep you in business. • Understand the business and marketing side of photography. If you don’t understand your value, how to sell, how to promote your work or how copyrights affect your income, you will soon be out of business. • Network. Business is about people and people who like you will find you work (if they think you are good). Build partnerships and mutually beneficial relationships with other business owners. Becoming a photographer is easy. Establishing yourself as a professional takes some work. Making a good living as photographer is very hard. Fortunately, for you, many of the people who are not making it as a photographer don’t follow the recommendations above. Good luck. What would you add to the list?
