Photographic & Digital #1 Featured Artist - Aurora Ira Cambridge , UK auroraira Aurora Ira’s artistic practice is experimental, embracing a variety of media and influenced by scientific research, Social Media and American Pop Art. Masks, death and undeath, repetition, memory and transformation are the key subjects of the artist’s practice. These subjects often define not only the work’s idea, but also the materials and the technique in which the work is performed. “It’s like the difference between seeing the blood or seeing the photograph of the blood”. The SUPERHERO project is a series of portraits of an imaginary character who is inspired by another imaginary character - Disney’s Mickey Mouse. This character wears a mask (as superheros are supposed to do). However, determined to expose his human nature, the artist’s superhero tries to convey his character by wearing masks that suggest Imperfections such as weaknesses, fragility and pain. But no matter how hard he tries - we refuse to see such failings, protecting the idea of a superhero even from the superhero himself: and letting him pay the price. The SELF PORTRAITS WITH MASKS series began in 2010. Initially six masks were designed using hand-sewn or previously live materials, such as fresh meat. These first six pieces were designed to cover the face entirely, obscuring it with the mask’s surface. In 2012, the project continued when new masks were designed in a way that physically transformed the face yet left it partially uncovered, allowing the viewer to see the transformation. Ira then “blindly” photographed herself while wearing the masks. In 2013, the project’s third stage began when all the photographs of 2010-2012 were projected on a computer screen and photographed again - these works are shown here. AURORA IRA is a UK based artist, photographer and art director who began to devote her time to art in 2010. She has exhibited work and been published in the UK, USA, Italy, Canada and Israel.
