Photography terms defined: Depth of Field (aka DOF) refers to how much in front of, and behind your target focus point of a scene remains in focus. A very shallow DOF is useful for macro (close up) work, portraits, etc., while a deep DOF is useful for things like landscape work, etc. It is controlled by the aperture setting on your lens for the shot. A small f number (meaning a larger aperture opening, yields a shallow DOF, and gets progressively deeper as you use smaller and smaller apertures. The b&w image shows the shallow DOF effect. Notice how the background is blurred out. The greater DOF of the image of the Jewel Box in Forest Park shows the difference quite dramatically.
