Photography terms defined: Shutter speed is a term used to describe the amount of time the light of the scene image is allowed to fall on the sensor in the camera. Inside the camera, covering the sensor, are a series of blades, or a curtain (depending on the manufacturers design), that keeps light from falling on the sensor. When you push the shutter release button, it allows these blades or curtain that make up the shutter to move, uncovering the sensor and letting the light from the scene fall on the sensor to expose the image. The amount of time this allowed for is what this shutter speed is describing. It can be fractions of a second (i.e. 1/125), or a very long exposure by setting it to the B setting (which stands for Bulb, a remnant of terminology from the old days of flash bulbs), which keeps the shutter open as long as you have the shutter release button pressed. The quicker the shutter speed, the more you can freeze the action of a fast moving object.
