Photos of my first Barn Owl in Alberta. They are not great because I dont like to use a flash with birds that have light sensitive eyes like owls. The owner of the property says she first noticed the Barn owls presence in September. A pair of GHOs raised a brood of owlets in the same yard this summer. I am surprised that they co-exist with the Barnie. I suspect that the Barn Owl may have wandered or been blown over here from British Columbia by strong westerly winds that blow through the Crowsnest Pass. It stays because it has found shelter in this large outbuilding, this is one of the warmest parts of southern Alberta, there are plenty of mice and voles in the surrounding fields and it would be difficult for it to fly back to BC against the prevailing winds. My theory anyway.
