Php 2:1-“If there be therefore any consolation in Christ, if any comfort of love, if any fellowship of the Spirit, if any bowels and mercies.” As we continue to look at the virtues that help us to walk in harmony and unity, today we consider-“…if any comfort of love…” Surely there is comfort even in the love of family, friends, and peers. But if you place it in the realm of knowing Christ, the love of God among Christians is second to none. Hear Albert Barnes-“…If there be any comfort in the exercise of tender affection. That there is, no one can doubt. Our happiness is almost all centered in love. It is when we love a parent, a wife, a child, a sister, a neighbor, that we have the highest earthly enjoyment. It is in the love of God, of Christ, of Christians, of the souls of people, that the redeemed find their highest happiness. Hatred is a passion full of misery; love an emotion full of joy. By this consideration, Paul appeals to them, and the motive here is drawn from all the joy which mutual love and sympathy are fitted to produce in the soul…” Jesus had earlier said in Joh 13:34-“A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another.” It is amazing the comfort that is found in love. If we know we are loved unconditionally, it brings comfort, security, peace, rest, and hope. It all starts with God as we see in John 3:16-“For God so loved the world…” It is a love the world doesn’t know or understand. John states this in 1 Jn 3:1-“Behold, what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called the sons of God: therefore the world knoweth us not, because it knew him not.” It is our greatest witness as Jesus equates in Joh 13:35-“By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another.” By the way, the word for love in our text in Phil. 2:1 is “agape”, which is God’s love. Strong’s Greek Dictionary defines it-“…love, that is, affection or benevolence; specifically (plural) a love feast: - (feast of) charity ([-ably]), dear, love...” Do you know that love today? God really does love you. Take comfort in that. Share that with someone today! Hallelujah!
