Php 2:15-“That ye may be blameless and harmless, the sons of God, without rebuke, in the midst of a crooked and perverse nation, among whom ye shine as lights in the world.” Paul continues to admonish them in their position and walk with the Lord. Today we consider-“…the sons of God…” Surely there could be no higher distinction than to be termed such. Albert Barnes adds-“…The children of God; a phrase by which true Christians were denoted…” It connecting the phrase back to verse 14, it means to conduct oneself in such a way as to reveal that they were sons of God, not to become sons of God. We know that to become “sons of God” is only through faith in Jesus Christ. John states this in John 1:12-“But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name.” Jesus further taught in Matt. 5:45-“That ye may be the children of your Father which is in heaven: for he maketh his sun to rise on the evil and on the good, and sendeth rain on the just and on the unjust.” Here Jesus says that the way we treat our enemies reveals if we are children of God or not. Paul adds a beautiful admonition in Eph. 5:1-“Be ye therefore followers of God, as dear children.” Are you a child of God this morning? Are you living in such a way as to reveal it? What a position! John Gill adds-“they were the adopted sons of God, and also begotten again by him, and made partakers of the divine nature; by their being followers of God as dear children, and by their being obedient ones to him in all holiness and godly conversation, yielding a ready and cheerful obedience to his will, without repining at it, or disputing about it…” Let us rejoice in our position and resoundingly commit ourselves to live out its privilege and responsibility. The world continues to watch!
