Physicist Sir Roger Penrose and Dr. Stuart Hameroff of the Center for Consciousness Studies at the University of Arizona recently presented an updated version of a twenty year old theory known as Orchestrated Objective Reduction, or Orch OR. They argue that human consciousness is a product of quantum vibrations in microtubules within brain neurons. They claim that such vibrations not only govern neural and synaptic functions, but also connect brain processes to biologically orchestrated quantum processes corresponding to the quantum structure of reality. Hameroff also suggests a correlation between anharmonic vibrations of microtubules and the structure of certain kinds of Indian music, as opposed to Western music which is generally harmonic. Practical applications of the research include treating brain microtubule vibrations to improve mental and neurological conditions.
