Pick an objective, and stick to it. When training for physique - TopicsExpress

Pick an objective, and stick to it. When training for physique development, you must recognize this as your main objective--everything must therefore be structured around this goal. Too often I see trainees wanting to gain size, but they are focused only on how much they can bench, squat, or deadlift. Even though these are great exercises and should be employed, they are merely tools in the toolbox--simply increasing the amount of weight used on them should not be the main focus. Doing so will detract from your goal. Remember you are training to increase your size, not your 1 rep max. I have learned this truth through my coaching experiences with hundreds of clients over the years, as well as my own experiences as a former power lifter. Just because you can bench 500lbs or squat 600lbs does not mean you will fully develop your physique. Now this is not to say you shouldn’t lift heavy relative to what you are doing; you still want to incorporate the overload principle. However, the quality of the exercise and getting maximum voluntary contraction are the most important points, which can only be achieved with proper technique and increased workload capacity with the addition of greater intensities. You want to reach muscle failure, not movement failure, when other muscles start assisting in the lift. Your goal is maximum hypertrophy and size, not maximum strength.
