Hundreds of tickets were sold and residents from DeLand and neighboring communities enjoyed the April 26-27 tour featuring six lovely DeLand gardens, live musical entertainment, tasty treats and lovely items for purchase.” Maurer continued. “The tour could not have come about without the commitment and generosity of out homeowners; the Brannons, Halls, Trittschuhs, Ungaros, Zeliffs and Mauers. Their love of gardening and pride in our veterans and community were the driving forces behind this, successful tour. Hearty thanks go to our sponsors (The Cloister’s of DeLand, MBI Direct Mail, Graphic Imagination at Wolfe’s Gallery, GA-TER Air), advertisers, musicians, vendors, Garden Club members and friends of the Garden Club- with special recognition to the West Volusia Corvette Club with parking and traffic control.” “This year’s tour”, said Maurer, “was especially meaningful as we honored the wounded men and women in the U.S. military who paid a great price for the freedom we Americans enjoy. Wanting to give a portion of funds raised to a wounded veterans program, our research led us to Jacksonville’s Veterans Farm and Purple Heart recipient, form Army Sergeant, Adam Burke. We were taken with the determination of this personable, young man who launched Veterans Farm in 2009, and for his extraordinary efforts, received from President Obama the 2012 Presidential Citizens Medal, the nation’s second highest civilian award - second only to the Presidential Medal of Freedom.” Maurer said, “The Garden Club of DeLand was extremely proud and pleased to present Adam with a $2315 donation to further the Veteran Farm mission to provide disabled, post- 9/11 veterans horticulture therapy and teach them sustainable agriculture so they can start their own organic fruit and vegetable farms or work for larger farming organizations.
