Picked up a sousveillance camera on eBay, and it just came in. It was recommended by my dad as being particularly useful for recording police encounters. It has the following features that make it useful for our purposes: * front-facing camera and a satellite camera that can be mounted anywhere (i.e. on the ceiling facing the drivers-side window) * audio recording * automatic recording when the car starts * can record up to 30 minutes after turning the car off (in case the cop makes you remove your key or exit the vehicle) * saves the output of each camera to a separate video file (no trying to extract picture-in-picture video) * records in an 8–10-hour loop (with a 32GB card), so you never have to remember to delete old files, but still have plenty of time to retrieve important events before theyre overwritten * saves in 1–5-minute (configurable) chunks, which makes management of video easier * chunks overlap by ~1/2 sec, to prevent losing any time (during a police encounter, that could be a very important word or action not recorded between files, otherwise) Drawbacks: * Satellite camera is low-resolution (640x480), but it the more interesting video feed for our purposes. * Saves to an memory card, not to a phone or the cloud, so theres more risk of confiscation/deletion. (However, such cameras are much more expensive.) Anyway, $60 ($45 for the camera, plus about $15 for a memory card on Amazon) will get you set up recording front and side views of every drive you take, allowing capture of police interactions for public accountability (and, if worst comes to worst, legal evidence). Ill be driving with it from now on, and thought Id pass on the idea here. (Heres the writeup on DashCamTalk: https://dashcamtalk/i1000-f70/)
