WWW.SAYNOTODOGMEAT.NET Back in 2013 Police in Rwamagana District are holding two men who were allegedly found trying to sell dog meat at Gishari trading centre on Tuesday. The two suspects are residents of Kinyana Cell in Gasabo District. Rwamagana residents were left dumbfounded as the two men were escorted to Kigabiro Police Station carrying two carcasses of a dog and a goat. The dog, just like the goat, had its skin, head, tail and paws removed and put on sale disguised as goat. Jean de Diue Mugabo, a resident, said the dog trade could have been going on unnoticed in many areas. “This is an eye-opener to us. We are served roasted meat in bars and we can’t tell whether its goat or dog or something our culture doesn’t allow us to eat,” he said. Paul Masumbuko, another resident, blamed the increase in such illegal trade to laxity of veterinary officers, adding they were not active enough to check the problem. Vigilance “These guys carried the dog and goat carcasses all the way from Kigali, no one stopped them. If meat dealers sell sheep meat disguised as goat meat, why are we surprised that they sell dog meat in the same manner?” Masumbuko asked. “Some people are determined to make money by all means, so unless the concerned authorities and the public become vigilant, I am afraid we shall be poisoned by all sorts of meat.” Jean Marie Njangwe, the eastern region Police spokesperson, said officers arrested the duo following a tip off by a local leader. However, there was drama as the suspects insisted that the meat they were selling was of a goat. “This is a goat, I don’t know why people are failing to see it. We sell goat meat and not dogs,” one of the suspects said, attracting scorn. Njangwe said the suspects will be charged with selling noxious food, which is contrary to Section 144 of the Penal Code. “Article 144 of the Penal Code stipulates that a person convicted of selling or feeding people poisonous substances faces life imprisonment. So, if they fall in the category, they (the suspects) will face the sentence,” Njangwe said. History of pet meat trade in Africa; Dog meat trade is normally heard of within Asia however it’s even more prominent within Africa being mostly in Ghana, Niger, Cameroon, Nigeria moving up north to Uganda, and the Democratic Republic of Congo. The dog meat trade known by most Africans as “the bush trade” is highly active and its not just our domestic companions that are actually slaughtered and then eaten. Wild dogs, Cheetahs, Hyenas and Leopards are also consumed along with primates too. This form of meat trade is seen not only as unethical but also unhygienic with high chances of other pathogens and virus passing on from canine to human thus causing disease spread. Our main primary objective though is to focus on the North African dog meat trade and exposing other areas within Africa too. Little is known of this trade, with very few individuals actually venturing into the African dog meat markets or areas where canines are slaughtered. Nigeria is known for its great wealth, but, its also known for its violence and harboring of terrorists that can and have in the past two years abducted foreign nationals regrettably seeing some murdered in cold blood. There is also the high risk of rape and personal violence such as theft and muggings. So what do we know about the trade within North Africa? Parts of the three northern regions are fast gaining notoriety in the trade of dogs, not for security purposes but for the meat of the animal. The apparent mad rush for dog meat in these areas has resulted in a situation where dogs are now more expensive than goats and sheep of the same size in the local markets. A dog dealer, Akurugu Ayindo, who spoke to press said business was booming and that he was making twice the profit he got from the sale of other animals. He told the paper that a one-year-old dog could go for GH¢25 as compared to goat or sheep of the same size which was available for a little under GH¢10. He however complained that the animals were difficult to acquire. He explained that he had to travel several kilometers to the outskirts of town before he could get supplies, sometimes at cut-throat prices, from some middle men who were beginning to dominate the business. He said this was why there was a hike in the prices of dogs, and that he could sell between 10 to 25 dogs every week. At a popular spot where dog meat is greatly patronized in Tamale, near the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (Radio Savanna), the owner told the paper that when she started, she slaughtered a dog each day but was now processing about five a day. The meat, according to her, was heavily patronized on weekends with many customers placing orders for their choice in advance. She said the hind leg of stewed dog meat could go for GH¢8 while other parts could cost up to GH¢10. She stated that over 300 dogs had been slaughtered since the inception of her business five years ago. At certain places, customers had to queue to buy cooked dog meat. A loyal customer, who preferred to remain anonymous, said he could not live for a week without taking dog meat. According to him, the meat offered him the opportunity to fraternize with his friends during the weekends. In Niger, eating dog is unthinkable; but in Nigeria, some tribes consider them a delicacy. Although they come under the pretext of catching “strays”, the dog eaters are notorious dog stealers and every dog owner I know is getting very tired of them. Dogs are actually in such a high demand in Zinder these days that people can’t have a puppy anymore without risk of it being stolen. As soon as Baloo had disappeared, everybody’s main concern (and the whole street was devestated as Baloo has a big fan club!) was controlling the dog eaters and making sure they did not run off with Baloo. Being part “European” (25% Beligen Shepherd and 25% Bernese Mountaindog) my only consolidation – had the dog snatchers indeed managed to slip off him – was that Baloo would have been sold as a pet / guard dog and not to slaughter, but the whole concept of the dog snatching => dog eating business makes me very uneasy indeed.
