Pictured below is an unidentified house in Berkeley, occupied as a summer rental by the Frederick Tillmann Jr. family in 1891. Its such a magnificent house that it would be a shame for its history to be lost. Any clues as to architect or owner? By way of background the Tillmann Jr. family lived in San Francisco and were prosperous merchants in The City, connected with Tillmann & Bendel, wholesale grocers, founded by Frederick Tillmann (senior), a 49 pioneer. Tillmann Jr. was president of Tillmann & Bendel, wholesale grocers and in 1891 (same year as photograph) founded the Oakland Preserving Company, which originated the Del Monte brand of canned products. Tillmann Jr.s wife Emma Mangels Tillmann was the niece of Claus Spreckels. In 1892 the Tillmann family later purchased and moved to a 12-acre estate in the Fruitvale District, returning to The City in 1900. The three photographs are 9x7 glossy prints, pasted on card; obviously professional, but not marked or stamped.
