Pictured below is the Brumbaugh Hospital which operated in Pen Argyl from 1932-1972. Dr. E Ralph Brumbaugh began practicing medicine in Pen Argyl in October 1930, when he opened an office at 306 W Main St. He had graduated from Juniata College in 1924 and Temple University School of Medicine in 1929. Dr and Mrs Brumbaugh established the first local hospital in the Slate Belt in 1932. This privately owned hospital, located at the Main St address, had twenty beds and private rooms. Geraldine Reto, daughter of Mr and Mrs Anthony Reto was the first baby born there. The hospital was equipped to handle minor operations and emergencies. Many doctors from the area treated patients at the Brumbaugh facility. Among them were Doctors Brackbill, Hess, Farace, McCormick, Stofflet, Dreher, Uhler, Turtzo and others. The hospital also was the first agency in the area to operate an ambulance, which was driven by Gus Verrone. The hospital was closed in 1972 following the death of Mrs Brumbaugh.
