Pieter Hugo (born 1976 in Johannesburg) is a photographic artist living in Cape Town. Hugo received the Discovery Award at the Rencontres d’Arles Festival and the KLM Paul Huf Award in 2008, the Seydou Keita Award at the Rencontres de Bamako African Photography Biennial in 2011, and was shortlisted for the Deutsche Börse Photography Prize 2012. Hugo is interested in capturing images of the continent’s marginalized peoples, including the blind, albinos, and AIDS victims in their coffins. The subjects of his intimate pictures stare directly in the lens of the camera, creating a dynamic between viewer and subject. “In my work I try to find some sort of agency in the pictures. I want my desire to look requited, and the confrontation that I have toward the subject requited in a way. You are looking, but you’re also being looked at, and by being looked at, your implicitness in this dynamic is being acknowledged.” (Pieter Hugo.) His work is now on show in different cities around the world. See pieterhugo
