Piles Set to Burn at Pine Ridge WMAs As weather conditions - TopicsExpress

Piles Set to Burn at Pine Ridge WMAs As weather conditions become favorable for safe burning in coming weeks, Nebraska Game and Parks Commission staff members will set fire to slash and tree piles at wildlife management areas in the Pine Ridge. Area manager Greg Schenbeck said people shouldn’t be overly alarmed if they see and smell smoke as the projects get underway at the four areas. The properties with piles to be burned include Metcalf WMA north of Hay Springs, Bordeaux Creek WMA east of Chadron, Chadron Creek Ranch WMA south of Chadron and Ponderosa WMA southeast of Crawford. The prescribed plans for the burning have been approved by proper authorities and Game and Parks staff will work with local fire departments to obtain proper burn permits. The plans allow burning to occur only during periods of extended snow cover with low temperatures and light winds. The piles are the result of recent efforts to thin forested areas of the WMAs to reduce fuel loads and consequently lessen the possibility of catastrophic wildfires. More information may be obtained by contacting Schenbeck at the agency’s Pine Ridge field office, 308-665-2924.
