Dinner is served on board. Monday, April 27 After landing, you will meet your guide at the Rome airport and transfer to Assisi. We will have some rest time followed by orientation to Assisi. We will have dinner and overnight in the hotel in Assisi. Tuesday, April 28 This morning we will have Mass and a guided visit of the world renowned Sacro Convento Basilica of St. Francis, where St. Francis’ body is entombed. The church is adorned with beautiful frescoes painted by masters of the high Middle Ages like Giotto, Martini, and Lorenzetti. After lunch in a nice restaurant in Assisi, we will take a walking tour through the Franciscan sites in the medieval part of Assisi including Chiesa Nuova, home of Bernard of Quintavalle, Saint Mary Major, and the Basilica of St. Clare. Overnight in Assisi hotel. Wednesday, April 29 This morning, we will visit our first hermitage—the Carceri. There we will have some time for meditation and prayer on the slopes of Mount Subasio. In the afternoon, you will have some free time in Assisi to do what you wish. Dinner and overnight in the hotel. Thursday, April 30 Today we will head west to visit the hermitage of the Celle di Cortona. We will also visit the church housing the incorruptible, St.Margaret. Then we will enjoy a gelato along the banks of Lake Trasimene - the largest lake in peninsular Italy. Dinner/overnight in hotel in Assisi. Friday, May 1 Today we will head up to Tuscany. First, we will stop in Gubbio, where St. Francis tamed a wild wolf. Next, we will visit another hermitage of Montecasale. Then we will continue to Laverna where, in 1224, St. Francis mysteriously received the stigmata, the wounds of Christ. We will accompany the friars on their daily procession at 3:00 and then return to Assisi for dinner and overnight. Saturday, May 2 Today we’ll continue our pilgrimage to the east through the Apennine Mountains to the little-known region of the Marches of Ancona. First stop: Camerino to meet the Poor Clares who will introduce us to us the life of Blessed Camilla Baptista, a 15th century Poor Clare nun, canonized in 2010. Next, we will visit the mother house of the Capuchin order in Renacavata where we will visit their museum and have lunch with the friars. Then we will continue to San Severino where we will spend the evening with another community of Poor Clare Sisters. Here we’ll have a reflection given by one of the Sisters, followed by evening prayer and dinner. We will return to Assisi for overnight. Sunday, May 3 This morning, we will have time to visit the basilica of St. Mary of the Angels, as well as San Damiano in Assisi. Take the afternoon free. Dinner and overnight in hotel in Assisi. Monday, May 4 Today we will have some quiet time to visit the hermitage of Monteluco overlooking the city of Spoleto. On the way back, we will stop in Rivotorto, where Francis and the first brothers lived in huts while they served lepers. Overnight and dinner in Assisi. Tuesday, May 5 Today we will depart for Rome. On the way down, we will stop in Greccio in the Rieti Valley, site of the first creche. After lunch in a nice restaurant overlooking the Rieti valley, we will arrive at our Franciscan hotel near St. Peter’s. Next, we will offer a guided tour of St. Peter’s basilica and square. Dinner on your own. Overnight in the Rome hotel. Wednesday, May 6 In the morning, we will walk down to the Vatican where we will hear Pope Francis give his weekly General Audience. In the afternoon, you will have some free time in Rome to do what you wish. We will conclude with dinner and overnight in our hotel. Thursday, May 7 We will offer one chartered bus departure to the Rome airport. It will arrive at Rome Fiumicino airport by 7:00am.
