Pilot Plan Proposal I. Title: Health and Human Performance (HHP) Program II. Overview: The proposed HHP program would be a service project between Health Physical Education and Dance department (HPED) Professors at Queensborough Community College (QCC) and interested Vincentians in Saint Vincent and the Grenadines. The HHP program would cover the topics of Health & Behavior, Exercise Science, Nutrition, and Personal Training. Upon completion, program participants would earn a Health and Fitness Trainer certificate. In turn, Vincentians interested in health-related professions would be invited to New York for additional training and experience provided by the QCC HPED department as well as other local institutions. III. Rationale 1. We in the QCC HPED department recognize the need to combat the growing epidemic of cardiovascular disease-related chronic illness that has affected our community. These risk factors make health education a high priority. In the last 3 years our department has been restructured to emphasize prevention of chronic diseases with a series of concentrations such as: Health Promotion & Disease Prevention; Exercise Science; and Nutrition. These programs have been extremely popular with our students, as the number of our health-related majors is on the rise. 2. Our partner, St. Vincent and the Grenadines is also affected by the epidemic of chronic diseases. According to the World Health Organization (2011), 76% of all Saint Vincent deaths are caused by non-communicable diseases, including 61% caused by cardiovascular disease, cancer and diabetes. In addition, the government of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines has recently made fighting chronic diseases a health initiative (Tolson, 2013). As is the case in New York, there appears to be a need for preventative health programs in St Vincent. Most chronic diseases are preventable. With informed health decisions, citizens can reduce the incidence of chronic diseases, thus improving the quality of life. 3. The mission of the HHP program would be to raise awareness and action regarding healthy behaviors, nutrition, and physical activity and give participants an opportunity to work towards improving the health and wellness of their community. 4. A prospective partner for this project would be the St. Vincent and the Grenadines Community College (SVGCC). A review of SVGCC programs and majors shows no programs in Health, Exercise Science or Personal Training. One nutrition course is listed for nursing majors. Our offer is to introduce the HHP pilot program program while laying the groundwork for further health-related work with its participants. We also hope such a project would commence a working relationship between QCC and SVGCC, which could lead to further collaborations, internships, and student exchanges. IV. Procedures: A. General: 1. QCC instructors will volunteer their time to travel to St Vincent and conduct the approximately 30 hour program. 2. Materials: Most materials will be provided by the participating QCC instructors, some of which will be sent to participants ahead of time. 3. Upon completion of the HHP program, one or two potential leaders could be identified to further their training in New York. For this, all of our HPED professors will collaborate to provide our Vincentian partners with further training and experience in our department as well as other related departments, programs, and institutions. B. Specific: 1. All specific procedures would be at the discretion of the Long Island/St Vincent partnership and other participating institutions. V. Time Frame: We would be available at your convenience. We understand that such a project would need local interest, promotion, and further logistical planning. With that said, we offer our services with further information and materials and possible visit in advance. We aim to be flexible in order to serve local needs. Project time frame: in order for participants to be eligible for certification, a total of approximately 30 hours would be needed for the program. We would be willing to send materials in advance in order for participants to become familiar with the program topics. VI.
