A Coast Guard airplane had searched until sunset Saturday and the Coast Guard Cutter Beluga searched until Sunday morning for wreckage. A fisherman recovered a wheel and an engine cowling thought to have been part of the plane, officials said. According to the FlightAware departure log, the plane’s tail number is registered in Brookfield. WISN 12 News has learned that the plane was piloted by Ronald Hutchinson of Brookfield. His son confirmed the news on Sunday afternoon. Hutchinson was a senior vice president for Harley-Davidson Corporation. Family members said he had recently retired from the company. The Coast Guard said the pilot lost consciousness while flying and the plane crashed into the Atlantic Ocean. Coast Guard Petty Officer Nate Littlejohn said officials in Portsmouth were notified about 2:40 p.m. Saturday that the plane failed to land in Manassas, Virginia, and continued into restricted air space in Washington, D.C. According to the Federal Aviation Administration, FAA air traffic controllers tracked a Cirrus SR20 with one person on board through the restricted airspace around Washington, D.C., early this afternoon. The pilot had not been responding to radio calls since 1 p.m. Two F-16 fighter jets under the direction of North American Aerospace Defense Command assisted the FAA with the unresponsive aircraft before the crash.
