Pine’s uniquely comforting and invigorating scent has been used therapeutically for centuries. Ancient Greeks, Egyptians, and Arabians used pine in religious ceremonies, and also for conditions like bronchitis, tuberculosis, and pneumonia. Native Americans made a special brew with the needles, which was consumed to prevent scurvy. The Scandinavians used pine branches in saunas, and many cultures stuffed mattresses with pine needles to repel lice, fleas, and other insects. In fact, pine-needle mattresses are still used today in the Swiss Alps, however now their purpose is as a remedy for rheumatism. Pine oil is also a favorite in bath oils and foams (always with a carrier), because of both its fresh, lively scent and its anti rheumatic properties. Therapeutic uses: Asthma, athlete’s foot, bronchitis, cellulite, colds and flu, coughs, cuts, cystitis, digestive problems, drowsiness, eczema, fatigue, gall bladder, hangover, nervous exhaustion, prostate problems, psoriasis, rheumatism, scabies, sciatica, sinus congestion, skin irritations, smoker’s cough, sore throat, and sores. Essential Oil Applications For asthma, bronchitis, coughs (including smoker’s cough), or sore throat, use 2-3 drops in a steam inhalation. Can also use 2-3 drops in a diffuser or 8-10 drops in bath water. For athlete’s foot, cuts, eczema, psoriasis, scabies, sores, or other skin irritations, use 2-3 drops in 1 ounce of carrier oil and massage on area. For cellulite, use 2-3 drops in a carrier oil and massage on affected area regularly. Can also use 8-10 drops in bath water. For colds, flu, sinus congestion, and/or sore throats, use 2-3 drops in a diffuser or steam inhalation. Can also add 8-10 drops in bath water. For cystitis or prostate problems, use 8-10 drops in bath water. For digestive problems, use 2-3 drops in a steam inhalation. Can also mix 2-3 drops in 1 ounce of carrier oil, and rub on chest and lower back. To alleviate drowsiness or nervous exhaustion, use 2-3 drops in a diffuser. For hangovers, use 2-3 drops in a hot or cold compress. Can also use 2-3 drops in a diffuser or 8-10 drops in bath water. Mixes Well With: Atlas cedarwood, cedarwood, citronella, clary sage, eucalyptus, frankincense, grapefruit, juniper, lavender, lemon, marjoram, myrrh, patchouli, peppermint, rosemary, sage, sandalwood, tea tree, and thyme. Safety Information: Avoid if prone to allergic reactions. Avoid if diagnosed with high blood pressure. Should not be used on the skin of children or the elderly. Be sure to avoid oil from Pinus pumilio (dwarf pine).
