Pineland Shopping Center Pineland, Texas 1951-1952 This picture is from The Indian 1952 Pineland High Schools Yearbook for 1951-1952. The new Shopping Center had opened that October. Construction began in July, 1950 and was completed on October 5, 1951. The Dry Goods Store was still called the Temple Lumber Company Store at this time. The original Company Store had stood here from about 1905 until 1950. I wonder where it operated from, while the new Shopping Center was being built in 1950 and 1951? The higher roof in the Dry Goods Store, accommodated a balcony for more clothing shelves. The wide handrail on the stair banister leading to the balcony, raised the blood pressure of many mothers as their children slid down it to the first floor. Notice that the signs had not been placed on top of the building yet. I recall a beauty shop and the post office were left (north) of the Dry Goods Store. In 1957, Pineland State Bank opened in the right (south) end. By the mid-1960s, the bank had moved to more spacious quarters on FM 83, where the West Sabine ISD Administration is now located. I can remember Dr. Gregory having an office here, and Sabine Investment Company, Temples Real Estate Division, as well. The Pines Guest Lodge had air-conditioned guest rooms (motel) in the north end, facing north. In 1951, Dick Retherford had a shoe repair shop and Lige King and A.J. Jackson had the Pineland Barber Shop, in the south end, facing south. It took two rail cars to deliver the flagpole.
