Pink Floyd countdown #31 - The Floyd really struggled in the aftermath of the success of Dark Side of the Moon. In the 1970s, some bands were finally breaking free of the demands of writing, recording and releasing an album or two every year. Other than a few shows in October and November of 1973, Pink Floyd was idle for a full year before beginning to work out new songs on the road starting in June 1974. Efforts to record those songs ground to a halt, and halfway through the album that would become Wish You Were Here, the band temporarily shelved half the songs and came up with new material, including Have A Cigar. Roger Waters lyric describes how tough it is to be a rock star; the vocal part was out of his register and David Gilmour reportedly did not want to sing such a complaining song. Thus Roy Harper was recruited as a guest vocalist. And as usual, a brilliant Gilmour guitar solo.
