Pink eye (also called conjunctivitis) is inflammation (redness and swelling) of the conjunctiva, the outer layer of the membrane that lines the eyelid and eye surface. Pink eye can be very contagious for as long as two weeks after symptoms appear. It’s important to diagnose and treat Pink eye to avoid spreading to other people. It is most commonly due to an infection or an allergic reaction. If irritation or infection occurs, the eye lining becomes red and swollen. Viral and bacterial forms of Pink eye can occur in people of any age, but are more common during childhood.
