Pioneer HPA axis researcher Bernard Barnie Caroll weighed in the comments At PLOS Mind the Brain on the Molecular Psychiatry article I critiqued. I was relieved to see that we were in total agreement. For those of you with a short sense of history, Caroll achieved international fame with his discovery of the dexamethasone suppression test (DST), which distinguished melancholia from non-melancholia depression. He left University of Michigan before I arrive, but the mood disorders unit was still famous and people who had co authored papers with him could virtually be assured tenure. Unfortunately, with a shift in the population of severely depressed in patients, the test will longer worked well has a biomarker. But for a while, everyone was convinced that more biomarkers would be forthcoming. In my blog post I am attacking another false positive.
