Pioneer Press article on another impending tear down, 27 Crocus Place in St. Paul. The City has halted demolition in order to complete an environmental assessment, which is required of contributing structures to historic districts. The State Historic Preservation Office lists 27 Crocus Place as a contributing structure to the Historic Hill District, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Once the Citys assessment is complete, the public will have 30 days to comment. This debate is another example of the battle between property owners rights, whatever their motivation, and Historic Preservation. While this administrator has great sympathy for the owners plight, I wonder if there might be a way to accomodate their needs, and still save this lovely Queen Anne.
