Pioneer soldier celebrates SAF Day. Many generations of soldiers have passed through NS, but our pioneer batch of soldiers are always respected for laying the foundation of our army. Mr Ow Yong Tuck Yang, who last served in 9 Division, is one of the few who can proudly declare that he was from the earliest generation of soldiers. He said, “I bore arms in 1965 as I felt that we needed to defend Singapore. There was a sense of urgency to fight for Singapore’s survival. I am very thankful of the men and women who have served. They are the reason we are here today. Because of their commitment, Singapore is safe. Today, we have a very strong 3rd Generation army. I find it very heartening that many NSmen are volunteering as volunteering was very rare in the past. I think to us Singaporean sons, NS is now a way of life. When we first started, the key intent was, when given a weapon, you must know how to use it.” A message from Mr Ow Yong: To the men and women of the SAF, that you have served is the reason we are here today! Thank you Mr Ow Yong for your 40 years of service and commitment to the nation!
