Pistol Pete Maravich passed away 27 years ago today (January 5th, 1988) at the age of 40. Unarguably, he was one of the greatest innovators of the game and was lost MUCH too soon. Truly a man WAY before his time who shaped the course of modern basketball. Pistols amazing stats and accomplishments are far too many to list here, but he remains the all-time leading NCAA Division I scorer with 3,667 points scored and an average of 44.2 points per game at LSU (PRE-introduction of the 3-point line and in only 3 seasons!!!!). In the NBA, he scored 50 or more points six times and 40 or more points thirty-five times in the regular season. What an amazing, magical player and always a treat to watch! What that man could do with a basketball, no one has ever done or likely ever will do. My favorite basketball player of all time who tragically died far too young.
