Placerville Hardware 441 Main St On this spot in 1849, was a two-story wooden structure known as the City Hotel owned by William Keith and Edwin Hoy. The building and lot passed through many different hands before being purchased by Silas Randall, a brick mason, who replaced the wooden building with the current plastered brick building in 1856. Again the building was bought and sold by many prominent Placerville business people including Charles Weatherwax, Charles Pearson, and Albert Kyburz. In 1956, it was sold to George Fausel. The Fausel family has operated Placerville Hardware for over 50 years. It is the oldest hardware store west of the Mississippi River and has served Placerville for 150 years.
