Planning approval sought for new school in Carrick-on-Suir A planning application for the long-awaited new Comeragh College school was lodged with Carrick-on-Suir Town Council last week. The community school, currently based at Greenside and Greystone St., submitted the application seeking permission to build its new campus on a green field site at Tinvane on the Pill Road. Comeragh College, which has about 300 students, is one of six schools around the country getting new premises as part of a Public Private Partnership involving the Department of Education and National Development Finance Agency. The investment in the six new schools amounts to €65m but an individual figure for the Comeragh College project isn’t yet known, says Tipperary Education & Training Board Assistant Principal Frank Bermingham. The planning application was submitted last Thursday, October 24 and the Council will reach a decision eight weeks from that date on whether to grant, refuse or seek further information on the project. If all goes well at the planning stage, Mr Bermingham said they hoped to start construction work in the final three months of next year. Mr Bermingham said it will take about 18 months to build the school and it’s hoped it will be ready to welcome its first students in September 2016. “This project is fantastic for the whole town. It’s going to create a lot of work in Carrick-on-Suir during the building phase,” he continued. “The new school is badly needed because Comeragh College is currently split between two buildings, one is the school’s own building and the other is the former Sisters of Mercy building, which it rents. This project will bring the school under the one site with sport facilities. It will be a major development.” he added. Comeragh College has been under pressure for space to accommodate its students for many years and has rented the extra accommodation at Greystone St. for about 20 years. The Nationalist
