Planning for next Spring.. who is in for 2015? we need a few good people. ;) This is the official summary from one part of a three day reptile and amphibian count in Cameron county, Texas. This count was made possible by me! and more importantly by the participation of the management at Sabal Palms preserve plus other public and private partners. Other properties may be online with the count in 2015. Dear Messieurs Patterson and Loff. This is the result of our first April survey of herpetofauna at Sabal Palms. Rana berlandieri 0.0.? Numerous, various locations adjacent to the resacas. Bufo (sic) Incilius valliceps 0.0.2 (cover boards) Syrrhophus (sic) cystignathoides campi (numerous, cover board sites) Gastrophryne olivaceous 0.0.1 (Banco cover board) Smilisca baudini 0.0.1 Palapa blind. Drymobius margaretiferus m. 4.1.1 (active in the forest) Drymarchon erebennus 1.1.1 (cover board plus on the levee road) Pantherophis e. meahllmorum 2.0 (cover board) Coniophanes imperialis 1.0.1 (cover board sites) Masticophis flagellum 2.1.0 (cover boards) Micrurus fulvius tenere 1.0 cover board) Salvadora grahamiae lineata 1.1 (cover board) Thamnophis proximus orarius 0.2.0 (cover board and new resaca) Masticophis schotti ruthveni 1.0 (cover board) Anolis carolinensis 2.1.1 (active on trails and wetland bridge) Cnemidophorus (sic) sp. (numerous, on the roads and in the old butterfly garden) Sceloporus olivaceous (numerous, cover boards, old parking lot, gardens and trails) Eumeces tetragrammus (numerous, active in the forest and under the cover boards). Trachemys scripta elegans (numerous, Daves overlook, Palapa blind). One other observation worth noting is that there is now one of the best crops of Tarantula I have seen in many seasons in that area. Also we did not deploy the Siren traps. Next year we plan to do so. Special thanks to Blake Tyler who was on hand for group day and provided valuable help and support.. Also present for most of the count were Tim Warful and Matt Cage.. Excellent hands and very respectful of your great park and resource. A couple of other participants managed to lose themselves but were rounded up before any harm could have been accomplished. All together a successful day with interesting results and no emergencies or unmanageable problems and much learning. Its also of note that a group of overseas visitors was enthralled by a couple of calm and cooperative snakes we held photo sessions for.. Its great outreach. This next year I will with your approval invite a limited number of the right people, supervise them closely and I hope and expect expand our knowledge of herpetofauna on your unique and beautiful preserve. A. Rentfro -- Taking applications now! we need a limited number of the right people.
