Plant of the Month: Large Shrub to Small Tree: Arnolds Promise - TopicsExpress

Plant of the Month: Large Shrub to Small Tree: Arnolds Promise Witch (Hamamelis x intermedia Arnolds Promise) A cross between Japanese and Chinese Witch Hazel. Hardy to zone 5. Garden height 15-20 ft., spreading, open branch habit becoming a large shrub and in time a small tree. Leaves are green in summer, wavy or rounded-toothed edge, and develop excellent fall color. Yellow flowering. Artists notes: This plant is a must-have for all gardens in this area, even small ones. A winter bloomer (often February and March) makes Arnolds Promise one of our first harbingers of spring. Flowers are clear yellow, ribbon or confetti-like, and scented (excellent for indoor arrangements). The Witch Hazel is legendary for its magical powers, water divining and healing are just two, with which Arnolds Promise will assist you. Fall foliage colors range from clear yellow to vibrant oranges. Witch Hazels are woodland trees and quite shade tolerant but for best flowering place them in full sun to light shade. I often plant them as specimens or in borders or as understory trees. Just like our native Witch Hazels, their natural growth habit is irregular making for naturally picturesque and sculptural shapes. Witch Hazels are excellent choices to plant as understory trees because they make great companions to many of our larger growing trees and there are many smaller shrubs, perennials and wildflowers that enjoy growing beneath the Witch Hazels as well. Do keep in mind, they dont care for full, hot sun in dry areas.
