Planting Bulbs Outside. This is the main season for bulb planting so you will get a good show in spring. Bulbs are often sold in large sacks and buying in bulk is of course much cheaper. If bulbs are to be successful they require to be allowed to complete their full cycle. Allow the growth to die back before cutting them. If you have bulbs in your lawn mow around the growth until approximately 6 weeks after the flowers have finished. Planting bulbs in containers can give you a lovely spring surprise and let you know that summer is on its way. Containers can be positioned almost anywhere in your garden but if positioned on your doorstep they will remind you of the summer to come. If the bulbs are tall varieties which are prone to being blown over by the wind, place canes or willow sticks around the edge of the container.
