Played the regular dance at a local hotel Banquet Room for the - TopicsExpress

Played the regular dance at a local hotel Banquet Room for the first time last night and made $12.50 an hour. An hour and a half to haul thousands of dollars worth of gear and set it up and do a sound check, 3 hours of playing well rehearsed music for the enjoyment of the 120 or so patrons who shelled out $10.00 a piece, then another hour and a half to pack up and haul all the gear home again. Six hours work for $75.00 per man. The crowd was very happy so we were invited to come back and do it again. My question is; after the organisers took in approximately $1,200 at the door and about $200 with a 50/50 draw, then after paying out a nominal fee for the hall (the hotel makes its money from the bar), buying a door prize and paying the MC, is there really no more than $300 left to go to a 4 piece band? Surely there must be at least another $100 to put toward the band budget. Why is it that everyone always assumes that artists, who have spent most of their lives honing their craft, just simply love to play and should be honoured to have an audience? I guess we should be happy with the applause and glad that we could help out whom ever is making the real money. Although it would be nice to be able to make the next equipment payment. Opinions anyone?
