Player Profile - Sergio Ramos: Sergio Ramos is the Undisputed King of Red Cards Ramos (Position: CB) has spent a total of 9 years at Real so far and as a player he has been part of some great moments in Reals quest for trophies. Stats (Real Madrid): - 408 games - 49 goals - 3x La Liga winner - 2x Copa del Rey winner - 2x Spanish Super Cup winner - 1x UEFA Super Cup winner - 1x Champions League winner - 19 RED CARDS Since arriving at Real from Sevilla (2004/2005) Ramos has managed to win the trust of every coach/ manager that have tried to steer the rocky ship that is Real Madrid. The reasons for this blinding trust are very evident if we look at his resume. Ramos had started out as a RB, a position he was also given at Real, but after a while it became painfully obvious that while this lad was undoubtedly one of the best young defenders out there, he was no RB, because his crossing abilities were simply not very adequate. Once he was placed in CB position his worth as a defender started shining through. His aerial game in, defense and attack, are of a very high standard. Combine this with his superb passing, dribbling and tackling abilities, and you have one of the best defenders the modern game has seen. Ramos has even managed to evolve his game to a different level. For a few years now he has been working on his ability to play cross-field passes. It has become a regular sight nowadays. During every game fans can count on Ramos to try this at least once and he mostly pulls them off as well. Another aspect Ramos has been keen to develop is his ability to hit a free-kick. Hes regularly spotted on the training ground working on this exact ability. He came close in the recent game against Real Sociedad, but unfortunately he couldnt convert it. Some might remember his famous free-kick vs Valladolid (May 7th, 2014). However in a team that has players like Cristiano Ronaldo, Gareth Bale, James Rodriguez Oficial and Toni Kroos ready to step up for any dead ball situation, Ramos might have a hard time getting an opportunity to even consider a shot. Unless Carlo Ancelotti decides he should have free-kick duty, but this is unlikely to happen as Ramos has an amazing aerial game so the best thing to do would be to put him in the box. Even though Ramos is considered one of the best defenders around, he does posses traits which tend to drag all of his other qualities down. Anger, brashness and overconfidence. His anger often leads him into confrontations with other players and the result is usually a card (red/yellow) against him. His brashness seems to take over after the fighting, verbal or physical, and often leads to more cards against him. Most attackers are aware of this and tend to lure him into these situations or sometimes he just creates those situations for himself without any regards for the consequences. His overconfidence stems from his believe that he is a good defender playing for one of the best clubs of the world. No one can blame him for this, because he has proven time and time again that he can hold his ground against the most skilled opponents available. However thanks to this trait he sometimes misreads certain situations. He becomes casual and careless against certain teams and this more than often lead to a goal scored against Real. As said before, one of his major problems would be his anger. One could argue that a defender should have a healthy appetite of anger issues, otherwise he might become more of a pushover. However a players anger should not cost his team a victory and it has been very apparent in some games that if Ramos had managed to show some discipline and restrain, Real would have a better shot at winning. Conclusion: Sometimes brute strength isnt necessary to prove just how strong you are. Walking away can be just as effective; always consider the consequences of your actions.
