Playing with state and private money, the University of California Press has been wreaking havoc in the name of promoting open access and finding a viable business model that works. Not long ago, the American Anthropological Association trusted its publishing future to the U of C Press before they regretted it and basically sold themselves out to the big for-profits. Now the U of C Press has a new program that is inching towards where the world is really going--reaching into authors pockets with the hopes that universities and foundations will pitch in.
