Playtime today at the library this morning, at Tom Brown Park this afternoon. At the library Ana does not want to listen to Mr. Gary sing even though its Wednesday and thats the big library attraction on Wednesdays. She always hides from him and says she doesnt want him to see her eyes. She can not explain why so we didnt go into the room where they do babytime songs, but I thought it would be a fine time to interact with some younger children when they hit the playroom after babytime and we could check out some books. We walked into the library and an older African American woman was sitting on the balcony play space and reading a fairy tale to a large group of young African American children (similar heights as Ana). They filled the balcony space. I could feel Airiana decide to go up and join them. I had her pause and I told her she could go up there but she needed to sit quietly and listen to the story. Thats just what she did. The kids were all from the same school or class or something and I guess were on a field trip to the library. Airiana politely settled herself pretty close to the front, sat down silently, and listened to a very good reading of Hansel and Gretel. She answered questions after about her name and her age. She went without protest to the playroom after the story was ended. She only had one little moment she said something about her doll she was holding during the reading so I went up there to moderate. I was welcomed, as was she. They were so gracious to share their story with us. The kids were verbally quizzed on the points of the story and the boy next to me asked if Airiana or I were going to go back to school with them. I told him we were going to stay at the library. I told Airiana to thank them for the story and she did. The storyteller introduced ALL of the children. Some said thier own name one by one and others raised their hands as the storyteller told us their names. It was lovely. Everyone at the library gave me a good longer-than-usual look because of my hair. It was really nice actually. I feel like with this hair I cant hide and pretend I am something more normal or smaller than I am. I cant lie about myself. Thats a good feeling. I can see how accepting a person is from the get go and wont be afraid that Ill shock them later in the conversation. It makes me not tiptoe around myself hoping not offend people. It makes me braver and feel more accepted for what I really am. Man it was fun to watch Airiana play at the park this afternoon. The temperature today was a little cool here so not many kids were out. But there was a 4 year old named Daisy in a My Little Pony track suit who ran with energy equal to Anas. Airiana was surprised the flower name was also a friends name. She liked it. They held hands while they ran and climbed over and played with all the playground stuff. Airiana handed out two of her three Equestria Girls dolls for Daisy to carry with her, and kept one for herself. They fed off each others good ideas and chased crows laughing all the while. I talked with Daisys 17 year old cousin and mother or some caretaker familial relation. We talked for a long time while the kids played. It was really nice.
