Please Be Safe If Youre Out In the Weather Today! Due to the Snow Storm today, we are re-posting our previous safety tips for Shoveling Snow. Please Read! *8 Tips For Shoveling Snow - Safety For Your Spine* Shoveling snow is definitely considered moderate exercise, so check with your physician to see if you should even shovel snow - especially if you have a heart condition or do not exercise regularly. If you are cleared to shovel: 1. Warm up with some light stretch exercises. 2. Dress appropriately by wearing slip-resistant shoes and light, layered, water repellent clothing that provides both ventilation and insulation. 3. Assume a safe stance. Stand with your feet about hip-width for balance and keep the shovel close to your body. Bend from your knees (not the back) and tighten your stomach muscles as you lift the snow. 4. Push snow. And if you have to lift snow, use the stronger leg muscles for support, not the back. 5. Do not throw the snow over your shoulder or to the side because the twisting motion may stress your back. 6. Shovel often as snow falls. The amount of snow that has to be removed is less and, therefore, lighter. 7. Use an ergonomically correct shovel. 8. Pace yourself and take frequent breaks. Don’t shovel for more than 30 to 60 minutes at a time. **Be Safe!**
