Please Pray for my Family in Indiana. This is my cousin Lynde. She is still in ICU but is reponding more everyday. #PrayForLynde A local woman is recovering after surviving a traffic accident Thursday that police are calling miraculous. Lynde Ertel Doup, 30, who resides with her family on the Jackson-Jennings County line, suffered serious injuries when the car she was driving collided with a semi-truck on U.S. 50 near Hayden. I dont know how she made it out alive, said Sgt. Mark Helms of the Indiana State Police. It is amazing that she did. Rainy conditions and wet leaves on the highway were factors. According to Helms, Doup was driving a 2010 Kia Rio eastbound near Hickory Hills at around 12:15 p.m. when the car slid into the path of a westbound semi-truck driven by Frederick Schmidt, 53, of Big Prairie, Ohio. The car hydroplaned on the wet surface and slid sideways, hitting the semi cab at almost a 90-degree angle, Helms said. The truck driver said he saw the car go off to the right a bit, then slid into him as if the driver overcorrected. The impact virtually demolished the small car, knocking its engine, transmission and other parts out. The collision also resulted in the semi going down a steep embankment on the south side of the highway. Rescue 20 personnel transported Doup to St. Vincent Jennings Hospital. From there, she was taken to IU Health Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis, where she remains in an intensive care unit as of Monday morning. She is being treated for head and other injuries. She was alert and talking to the paramedics as they put her in the ambulance, said Deputy Kevin Hall of the Jennings County Sheriffs Department. We all hope she will be OK. Helms, also the accident reconstructionist, said he has yet to interview Doup but believes she was wearing a seat belt, which probably was a factor in her survival. An unknown amount of diesel fuel spilled from the semi because one of its tanks was ruptured, requiring a hazmat crew from Brownstown. The highway was closed until around 4 p.m. while workers cleaned up the fuel and other large amount of debris.
