Please Share. SEVERE WEATHER WILL KICK OFF TOMORROW IN ILLINOIS, INDIANA AND OHIO WITH SEVERAL THUNDERSTORMS. SHOULD THESE THUNDERSTORMS CONVERGE, JOIN WITH EACH OTHER, THIS IS CALLED A MESOSCALE CONVECTIVE SYSTEM. THESE HAVE A HIGH CHANCE OF CREATING A DERECHO. ONCE THIS SYSTEM COMES TOGETHER, ALL OF PENNSYLVANIA WILL BE IMPACTED BY THIS SYSTEM. Derechos are referred to as land hurricanes due to the hurricanelike conditions that occur over land with this weather phenomenon. This term refers to a type of thunderstorm complex that is at least 240 miles wide, according to the Storm Prediction Center. These violent severe thunderstorm clusters produce widespread and long-lived, straight-line wind damage. Wind gusts of greater than 57 mph occur in derechos, but gusts as high as 200 mph have been recorded. Hail, flooding and isolated tornadoes can also occur with derechos. I HAVE PUT TOGETHER A PAGE ON THE WFP WEBSITE ABOUT DERECHOS. A LINK TO A VIDEO PAGE ABOUT DERECHOS IS ON THIS PAGE. weatherforecastsforpennsylvania/facts-about-derechos
